Where to Buy Martinborough Wines: A Guide for Collectors and Enthusiasts

Published on 3 November 2026 at 19:14

Martinborough produces some of New Zealand's most sought-after wines, yet finding the best bottles is not always straightforward. Limited production, strong demand and winery allocation systems mean that some wines sell out quickly, while others can be difficult to source outside the region. Whether you are looking to secure a few bottles from the outstanding 2024 vintage or build a cellar of Martinborough wines, knowing where to buy is almost as important as knowing what to buy.

Buy Direct From The Winery

For many Martinborough wines, buying direct from the winery is the best option. Most producers sell through their websites and ship throughout New Zealand, while a visit to the cellar door may provide access to older vintages, cellar door exclusives or tasting opportunities before purchase. Joining a winery mailing list can also be worthwhile, as some of the region's most sought-after wines are offered to subscribers before general release, and in some cases only available to subscribers. Even then, the combination of small production and an outstanding vintage may mean that allocations are effectively first-in, first-served.

In some cases, notably Devotus, wines are offered en primeur before bottling and may sell out completely through this channel.

For visitors to Martinborough, buying directly from the winery provides an opportunity to taste before purchasing and discover wines that may be difficult to source elsewhere. Through my Private Martinborough Wine Tours, I also help visitors navigate the region's producers, identify wines suited to their tastes and budget, and assess which wines are most deserving of a place in the cellar.

Martinborough Wine Merchants

Without question, the best one-stop-shop for Martinborough wine is Martinborough Wine Merchants. They carry stock from almost all Martinborough and the wider Wairarapa producers, may have limited allocations of highly sought after wines and may sometimes carry limited stock after the winery cellar door has sold out.

For visitors unable to explore every winery individually, Martinborough Wine Merchants provides perhaps the most efficient introduction to the region's producers in a single location

Specialist Retailers in New Zealand

Auckland

Fine Wine Delivery has a good range of cellar-worthy Martinborough wines, and Pinot Noir from the top producers is well represented.

Wellington

Regional Wines have an excellent selection of wines from Martinborough including from some of the hard-to-find smaller producers that do not operate a cellar door.

Christchurch

Vino Fino have a useful Wairarapa Wine Country tab on their website featuring 35 wines, a mix of signature wines from the best-known producers with a smattering of boutique cuvees from winemaker private labels

Back Vintages and Library Wines

For collectors, mature Martinborough wines can be considerably more difficult to source than current releases. Most producers hold little or no stock of older vintages, and once wines have been sold they often disappear into private cellars for many years.

A few opportunities do exist. Nga Waka Has a small selection of back vintages available for purchase for their cellar door, while Ata Rangi periodically releases carefully cellared library wines directly from the winery. Quantities are inevitably limited and sought-after wines can sell quickly.

For wines no longer available from the producer, fine wine auctions may provide the best opportunity to acquire mature bottles. Auction houses such as Webb's or Wine Auction Room occasionally offer older Martinborough wines, sometimes including vintages that have been unavailable through normal retail channels for many years. For the oldest wines a degree of caution about provenance is required.

Buying Martinborough Wines Internationally

Wine Collective

Wine Collective Direct provides an efficient method for overseas purchasers to buy wine from Martinborough (and other NZ) producers and have it shipped directly to your home hassle-free. Their website provides bottle-pricing inclusive of all shipping costs, import taxes and duties, safe packaging and insurance. Shipping destinations include Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, UK, and USA. At the time of writing for Australian purchasers/visitors there is a very attractive deal where you can assemble a 15 bottle case from your favourite Martinborough producers and have it shipped to your Australian home free of freight cost – worth about $144

International Channels In-Country.

Many Martinborough producers export wine internationally, particularly to Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and parts of Asia. Rather than attempting an exhaustive listing here, the best starting point is usually the winery website, where distributors and importers are often listed. If no distributor information is provided, a direct email enquiry will often identify the nearest stockist.

Advice for Collectors

  • Buying on release

This is the most reliable way to ensure you secure signature wines from the best producers in a good vintage. It is important to be on the producer’s mailing list to ensure you have the opportunity particularly for vintages like 2024 where high quality was accompanied by reduced yields. Reviews may not always be available (although wineries often send bottles to reviewers before release) but this is less important for wines you know to be consistently good.

  • Securing scarce wines

The most sought-after Martinborough wines rarely become easier to obtain after release. Joining winery mailing lists, purchasing on release and developing a relationship with specialist retailers are often the most effective ways to secure allocations. For highly regarded wines from producers such as Dry River or limited-production boutique wineries, waiting for reviews before buying can mean missing out altogether.

  • Building a cellar

If you are new to cellaring wine and do not yet have an established cellar, the simplest and safest initial step for cellaring quaity wines is to purchase a temperature controlled “wine fridge”. For detailed options and advice check out my article  Cellaring Wine: A Practical, Real‑World Guide.

Martinborough remains one of New Zealand's most compelling wine regions for collectors, combining strong ageing potential with relatively limited production. Whether buying directly from the winery, through specialist merchants or via international distribution channels, planning ahead is often the key to securing the region's most sought-after wines.
