Why Tour with Wineinsights?
Wineinsights combines two advantages rarely found together: formal wine expertise and long-established access within the Martinborough and Wairarapa wine community.
Wineinsights combines two advantages that are difficult to replicate: deep wine expertise and privileged local access. Formal wine qualifications, extensive published wine writing and ongoing regional research provide the knowledge to explain not only what makes a wine enjoyable, but why it tastes the way it does. At the same time, long-established relationships within the Martinborough and Wairarapa wine community help create opportunities beyond the standard public tasting experience, providing guests with a deeper and more personal connection to the region's wineries, winemakers and wines.
Wine Expertise & Regional Knowledge
Wineinsights combines formal wine qualifications, decades of engagement with Martinborough wine and extensive experience in wine education and communication.
John Penney holds the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines with Distinction and has completed winemaking studies through the University of Adelaide. He serves as Cellarmaster of the Martinborough Wine & Food Society and regularly organises and presents private tastings of Martinborough, New Zealand and international wines. These tastings have attracted not only wine enthusiasts but also local winemakers, reflecting the level of trust placed in John's palate and wine knowledge. In addition to leading wine appreciation and sensory evaluation sessions, he brings a professional background in adult education and a long-standing involvement with Martinborough wine dating back to 1988. A permanent Martinborough resident since 2017, John combines formal wine study, practical tasting experience and decades of engagement with the region's wine community.
Local Relationships & Winery Access
Long-standing relationships throughout the local wine community create opportunities beyond the standard public tasting experience.
Wineinsights tours are built on long-standing relationships within the Martinborough and Wairarapa wine community. These relationships help create opportunities that often extend beyond a standard cellar-door visit. Depending on availability and guest interests, this may include meetings with winemakers, premium and limited-production wine tastings, access outside normal public opening hours, vineyard walks, winery tours and occasional barrel tastings. Because itineraries are individually tailored, Wineinsights is often able to match guests with experiences that provide a deeper understanding of the region's wines, people and places.
Published Wine Writing & Regional Research
Extensive published wine writing and decades of international wine travel support a depth of knowledge that extends well beyond the local tasting room.
Over several decades, John Penney has visited and studied wine regions throughout New Zealand and internationally, developing a particular interest in the relationship between place, people and wine. This experience is reflected in more than 80 published articles distributed through Wineinsights and to dedicated subscribers.
In addition to writing extensively about Martinborough, the Wairarapa and the wider New Zealand wine industry, John has published detailed articles on international wine regions including Hungary, Sicily, Canada and Australia. He also writes a regular wine column for the Martinborough Star and has contributed guest articles to BC Wine Trends, Diane Wine Voyage and Wine Reporter.
John's wine writing has also been republished and featured by respected Martinborough producers including Ata Rangi and Nga Waka. Such republication provides independent recognition of the quality and relevance of his wine writing, wine knowledge and regional research. Together with ongoing winery visits, international wine travel and continuous study, this work provides an important foundation for the insights and perspective shared on Wineinsights tours.
